Franklin County Among Many Counties Seeking To Pass Marijuana Tax

Franklin County Commissioners approved a ballot measure for the April 4, 2023 election to seek voter approval for a countywide sales tax of 3 percent on recreational marijuana sales taking place within the county.

The commission unanimously approved the ballot issue during their January 17 meeting following a motion by Second District Commissioner Dave Hinson and seconded by First District Commissioner Todd Poland, which was then approved unanimously by Hinson, Boland and Presiding Commissioner Tim Brinker.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Presiding Commissioner Brinker stated, “the biggest thing to relay to taxpayers is that the opportunity to impose a countywide sales tax of 3 percent on all tangible personal property retail sales of adult use marijuana has been put in the hands of the taxpayers to let them decide. If the proposed countywide sales tax passes, the tax generated will go to public safety first and foremost.”

Crawford County on Tuesday, January 24, also approved a proposed 3 percent tax on marijuana sales for the April ballot, with the funds to be used for the purpose of the county. See related article in this week’s Bourbon and surrounding area section of Sullivan Independent News.

City of Bourbon has also placed a 3 percent tax measure for marijuana sales before its voters in April.

Should Bourbon and Crawford each approve the measure combined with the six percent tax by State of Missouri the combined tax in Bourbon would be 12 percent.

The City of Sullivan has not placed this issue before its voters at this time.
