High school teacher indicted on charge of improper relationship with 17-year-old student

Jefferson County — The Jefferson County grand jury has indicted a teacher on a charge of Improper Relationship between Educator and Student.

Sheriff's deputies arrested 32-year-old Ikeyia Javea Roberts in December. If convicted, she could face 2-20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

According to a probable cause affidavit for an arrest warrant obtained by KFDM News, BISD Police were notified December 5 of an alleged improper relationship between an educator and student. BISD confirmed in an email December 5 to media that it became aware of the allegations that day involving a Beaumont United High School teacher, and said the teacher was no longer affiliated with the district.

The affidavit states BISD Police were provided with a photo that showed Roberts laying on the leg of a 17-year-old Beaumont ISD student.

The student provided written and verbal statements that he and Roberts were in a 'dating relationship' in which 'she purchased a ring for him and allowed him to spend the weekend with her, starting on or about December 3.' He stated that Roberts performed oral sex on him and they had sexual intercourse.

BISD Police say Roberts provided written and verbal statements indicating she met the student about a month and a half ago.

"It started off as just a typical teacher/student relationship," the affidavit quotes her as saying. "Where that line blurred, I'm not 100% sure."

She said around November, the student and her started the inappropriate relationship.

"I understand that my actions were wrong at the time, and instead of stopping, I allowed it to continue."

She confirmed the two had sexual intercourse, according to the affidavit for her arrest.
