LONGTIME FORMER BRENHAM ISD TEACHER, COUNTY COMMISSIONER PASSES AWAY

Paul Pipes (Memorial Oaks Chapel)

An Army veteran, former Washington County Commissioner and long-time Brenham ISD teacher has passed away.  Paul Ray Pipes died early Wednesday morning at the age of 94.

Pipes was born on October 1, 1928 in Truscott, Texas.  After high school, he served in the United States Army on the front lines during the Korean War.

Upon returning stateside, he enrolled at Sam Houston State University, and received a Master’s Degree in Business.

Pipes then went to work for Pan American Petroleum, which later became British Petroleum in their Thibodeaux, Louisiana office.

It was there that he met his future wife of 60 years, Linda Mullins, when they were singing in the church choir together.

After their daughters were born, they moved to Brenham, where Pipes began teaching business classes at Brenham High School. Pipes also served as the county commissioner for Precinct 4 from 1991 to 1998.

Pipes is survived by his wife, Linda, daughter Dana Sweeney and husband Brian, daughter Tricia Bingham and husband Chris, and four grandchildren; Paul, Grace, Isabella, and Clara.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7am to 7pm at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham. The funeral service for Paul Ray Pipes will be Monday at 10:30am at the Brenham First United Methodist Church.  Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio next Thursday, February 2, at 10am.

  1. I just read that Paul Pipes died this week. Paul was my friend, and he was the kind of hero that is the stuff of legends and great novels. He was too modest to praise himself, but he told me his story of his combat at Pork Chop Hill in the Korean War, and it is a story that needs to be told and preserved in the records of Brenham’s great warriors. He also served as a County Commissioner winning in the closest race in Washington County history. A recount ended in a tie, and a second recount gave him the victory by one vote based on a contested ballot where the unknown voter had crossed out names of candidates not wanted by the voter rather then checking candidates wanted. You need a special program about Paul.

  2. Paul Pipes
had a very big impact on my life by encouraging me several times to go to college. As an adult, I took an accounting class in the evening at BHS with him as the instructor. He talked to me after class several times about my future education. I guess he saw that I had potential. I was always thankful that he gave me guidance.

My condolences and prayers goes out to this family. I had the opportunity to work with Mr. Pipes for one year at BHS in 1984. Mr Pipes was a great mentor, teacher and truly loved kids. He was always upbeat and did not mind in helping to bring out the best in whomever he work with. He will not be forgotten as one of the greatest influences in my life.
Again, my prayers, my thoughts and my memories of Mr. Pipes will never be forgotten and may he rest in peace.

  4. All our love, condolences and prayers to the family of Paul. He was a wonderful father, teacher and member of the Brenham community. So many fond memories-he will be missed.
    Condolences,
