TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Longview ISD is offering a free course for adults who want to learn a valuable skill, and maybe save some money. If you’ve ever have plumbing issues at your home, you know about the problems it creates. Frozen or broken pipes, leaks, no water for days, and of course the expense of hiring a plumber.

“Very expensive. Outrageous. If I knew how to do it myself, I’d save the money,” says one Longview homeowner.

It wasn’t something most people thought about, until the great snowstorm of February 2021 had homeowners calling plumbers for weeks.

Longview ISD is offering a free six-week plumbing course for adults.

“Right now it’s 2 courses , 4 nights a week. 2 different classes,” says plumbing instructor Harold Gober.

The six-week beginner program will be twice a week at the Longview high school campus, and is provided at no cost thanks to a grant from AAON coil products in Longview, and focuses on even the most simple aspects.

“First off they can learn where to shut the water off to their house at. You’d be amazed at the people that don’t know that. How to put in a kitchen sink, how to put in a garbage disposal, how to set a commode,” Gober says.

The goal is to give people ‘do it yourself’ skills, a maybe spark a future plumber in the process.

“Whether they want to further their own career what they’re already doing, or they want to learn more about working on their own house. Right now the plumbing field is wide open. Every contractor in the country is screaming for people,” Harold says.

Registration for the free classes is an in-person event from eight to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Longview high school CTE building at 201 East Tomlinson parkway.
