The rescheduled District 12-5A Division II game between LBJ and Northeast has been canceled, according to social media posts from Northeast High School officials Thursday. Originally scheduled for Sept. 16, the game was postponed a week because of a staph infection outbreak at Northeast High School.

LBJ will be awarded a forfeit win, which gives the Jaguars a 1-0 record in district play and an overall record of 2-2. LBJ will face McCallum next week in a district contest after two weeks off.

Northeast falls to 0-3-1, including a 29-29 tie with San Antonio Christian. The Raiders are 0-1 in District 12-5A DII.

For tiebreaking purposes, LBJ is awarded an 18-point win based on the district’s bylaws.

Austin school district officials confirmed Sept. 14 that Northeast's football team had experienced a staph infection outbreak. According to a letter from Northeast Principal Nathan Neal to the school’s parents, “multiple individuals in the football program have tested positive for a staphylococcal bacteria skin infection. Our number one priority is the health and well-being of our students, staff, partners and families. All individuals with infections have been isolated and the areas that the individuals may have been in have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.”

LBJ and Northeast have a storied rivalry dating back to 1974, when LBJ began varsity competition and drew students that previously attended Northeast, which was known as Reagan High School until 2019. The Austin school district changed the school’s name because of the namesake’s ties to the Confederacy.

The teams played every year from 1974 to 2019, when UIL realignment dropped LBJ into Class 4A Division I for two years. LBJ returned to Class 5A this season and joined Northeast in District 12-5A DII. Northeast held a 16-13-1 edge in the series until 2004, when LBJ began a 16-game winning streak in the series that coincided with Northeast’s struggles on the football field. LBJ won the previous three games in 2017-19 by a cumulative score of 176-0.

Travis, New Tech schedule nondistrict game

With both Travis and New Tech in search of a game, the two teams scheduled a nondistrict contest Thursday at House Park.

Both teams entered this week on an official bye, and both teams were one game short of their 10-game regular-season limit.

New Tech, which competes in District 13-4A DII, is 3-1 after falling to San Antonio YMLA last week. The Titans will begin their five-game district schedule Oct. 7 against Achieve. Travis improved to 2-1 after beating Navarro 27-21 in last week’s District 12-5A DII opener. The Rebels will resume district play next week against Northeast if Northeast is able to play after the school’s staph infection outbreak.
