The National Football Foundation recognized Demetrius Hunter as a member of the 2022 Team of Distinction along with 81 other high school scholar-athletes from around the nation. Hunter, who graduated earlier this year, had a 4.30 GPA and was a team captain as well as an Under Armour All-American. Hunter also earned a place on the Superintendent and Principal’s Honor Roll and UIL Academic All-State.

Criteria to make the team included but was not limited to academic achievement, athletic accolades and community involvement. Each chapter is limited to one honoree, distinguishing them as the top scholar-athlete from all the high schools covered by the chapter.

Hunter signed with the University of Houston and will become a member of its football team later this fall.

Former West Orange-Stark standout Kevin Smith joins 80 other players on the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame ballot for his stellar career as a defensive back for the Texas A&M Aggies.

During his collegiate career from 1988-1991, Smith set an A&M defensive record with 20 interceptions as well as 289 yards worth of interception return yards and three returned for touchdowns. He was also credited with breaking up 32 passes. In 1991, he also returned a punt 73 yards, placing him in the school’s Top 10 for that record.

Some of his college accolades include consensus All-American Defensive Back, three-time All-SWC Defensive Back, Nation’s Top Defensive Back, Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist, and he was also a first-round draft pick for the Dallas Cowboys in 1991 where he went on to help lead the Cowboys to three Super Bowl wins.
