The board of directors of Goldberg Montessori School has hired Helene Lubel as head of school, beginning July 1. The announcement was made June 29.

Lubel comes to GMS with extensive experience, and as a leader with a passion for early childhood and Jewish education. She brings a unique skill set to GMS with a strong knowledge of Montessori education.

In addition to holding a degree in education, Lubel spent a year in Italy, the birthplace of Montessori education, exclusively learning Montessori methods and teaching techniques. She spent her career in education and embraces the importance of creating a strong team to provide a safe and positive learning environment for students.

“We are so excited to begin the next chapter at Goldberg Montessori School with Helene Lubel as our head of school” said Haya Varon, board of directors chair. “Helene is a master Montessori educator with years of administrative experience.”

Elyse Kalmans, chair of the school’s search committee emphasized Lubel’s history as an educator.

“Former staff and parents praised Helene’s ability to work with young children and their families,” said Kalmans. “We heard from many former colleagues that Helene has the ability to not only teach in the classroom, but has used her master teaching ability to continue to train teachers”

Lubel comes to GMS as a teacher within HISD at Roberts Elementary and, prior to her tenure there, at Garden Oaks Montessori, where she provided ongoing Montessori teacher training in addition to her daily teaching responsibilities.

Before teaching within HISD, Helene worked for 11 years at Robert M. Beren Academy. At Beren, she implemented the elementary school Montessori programs and was principal of the Early Childhood Program and Traditional and Montessori Programs, first through fifth grade.

Lubel received her Bachelor of Science of Education from The University of Texas and AMI-Elementary Teaching diploma from the Association Montessori International in Bergamo, Italy.

Over the course of her career, she has received three certifications from the Harvard University Graduate School in Education, focusing on leadership in the workplace.

Lubel began her career teaching at Hebrew Academy for five years and at Post Oak Montessori for six years. During this time, she was awarded the Walter Kase Teacher Excellence Award by the Anti-Defamation League Southwest Region.

Goldberg Montessori School is the oldest Jewish Montessori early childhood/kindergarten program in the Southwest region of the United States. It combines a rich Judaic studies curriculum with motivational Montessori guidelines and materials, established by Maria Montessori more than 100 years ago. Dr. Montessori believed that “the most important period of life is the first one, the period from birth to age 6, for that is the time when man’s intelligence itself, his greatest implement, is being formed.”

Goldberg Montessori School prides itself on providing a nurturing environment that facilitates learning. The school’s commitment is to honor the path of each child.
