EL PASO, Texas- Franklin High School Sophomore Nicholas Koch will be competing in next week's UIL State Competition which will be held in Austin, Texas.

Koch battled his way through the Regional stage going head to head against schools from El Paso to Dallas.

He will be competing in the pros and interpretation division of the tournament.

Koch told ABC-7 that his performances are a look into who he really is.

“Being black and being gay and as a minorirty in a Texas it can be really difficult.  Being able to spread messages that really move people and resonate with people makes it much more rewarding for me,” the Franklin Sophomore shared.

He wanted to thank his coach Yolanda Silva and the school officials that helped him reach his goal saying, “Most importantly our principal Mrs. Mena and our academic coordinator Mr. Rosales.  They help us so much through the speech program and they help us get to where we need to go and they make sure we have so many opportunities that we can.”
