Rob O’Brien has been the assistant principal timpani/section percussionist since 2023. O’Brien holds degrees from Boston University, New England Conservatory and Rice University and has had a career in the Omaha Symphony and Houston Ballet Orchestra.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I enjoy cooking, baking, reading, and golfing.

What kind of music do you listen to, outside of classical?

Classic rock

If you weren’t a professional musician, what would you have done instead?

I would have gone into geology or some kind of natural science.

What would you like North Texans to know about the Symphony?

Beyond the time spent rehearsing by the musicians you see onstage, there are many, many hours of planning and strategizing done by a huge team of staff and board members that make our concerts possible. The passion that every member of this large organization brings is paramount to the concerts with which we hope to inspire the community.

What’s something about Dallas that has surprised you since moving here?

TREES! I have discovered some amazing parks and green spaces in my area.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I like to run, hike, and hang with my dog, Tessa.

If you weren’t a professional musician, what would you have done instead?

I would have been a mountain climber or gone into archaeology.

Pretty much any wine

We are real, interesting, and engaging people who are a part of this vibrant city. There is something here for everyone!

Hayley Grainger joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as associate principal flute in 2022. With a background in the Rochester Philharmonic and Chattanooga Symphony. Grainger has won the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition and the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Competition.
