ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) - An annual student-run plant sale is in full swing, according to the Ector County Independent School District, or ECISD.

The district’s career and technical education (CTE) students will run a greenhouse at 7651 W. Dunn Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until May 3. The five-day sale benefits horticulture and agriculture students by funding the greenhouse project for next year’s sale.

Students sold half of their 2,000 plants during Monday’s kick off. Plants are priced from $6 to $30, but on May 2 and May 3 they will be sold at half price. They accept cash or checks.

The annual sale has been a tradition for as long as staffers remember. This is the second sale at the Dunn Street greenhouse.

“We were off of Grandview. I know that’s kind of difficult, the distance now,  but it’s exciting to see some of our originals still coming and making the drive out here and still supporting our program. That’s really neat to see,” horticulture teacher Christina Butler said.

The plants are also grown and potted by students.

Every CTE student earns a horticulture or agriculture certification when they graduate. They prepare for the annual sale all year and use it to build professional skills.

“Helping all these customers just made me feel some sort of like joy,” said Erica Chavez, a Permian High School student. “Like knowing that I helped this person today…. It made me happy. "
