After they were canceled in April because of rain, the sixth annual "Unidos Games" kicked off Wednesday morning at the Burges High School in east El Paso.

The two-day event gives differently-abled students from the El Paso Independent School District the opportunity to showcase their athletic prowess.

The games started with a parade and featured running, biking, and walking competitions.

With over 700 students and 44 campuses participating, Veronica Reyes, executive director of specialized learning services, said attendance has been growing year after year since they started in March 2018 with around 350 students.

Inspired by the event, Reyes said,

This reminds us why we do what we do.

Special Education AIM teacher Roxana Angulo from Tinajero Elementary School brought 16 students, ranging from 1st to 5th grade, who she said they've been practicing since November.

When speaking on what the games offer to students and the community, Angulo said,

It's camaraderie. You get to see the other schools, you get to see the other teachers and they see the effort that EPISD put into these games.
