HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) —  Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District is partnering with the University of Salamanca for a new study abroad program.

The program is being offered to high school juniors and allows up to 20 students to learn about the culture and language for two weeks.

“They’ll walk away not only a life-changing experience but also a college credit from the University of Salamanca, which is very, very exciting and they will have a transcript from the University of Salamanca,” said Monica Kaufmann, HCISD Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education.

The University of Salamanca was founded in 1218 which makes it one of the oldest universities in the world.

The deadline to apply is May 3 and the cost for students to participate is $3,800.

In hopes of us growing it for next year, we’re hoping to offer it for more students and hopefully in the future offer scholarships for those that can’t find a way to participate this year,” said Kaufmann. “But for this year as a soft launch and a small pilot, we’re going to offer it to those that can actually self-fund their trip to Salamanca, Spain.”

Interested students and parents can find more information on HCISD’s website.
