Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., reintroduced a resolution Wednesday to recognize April as “Arab American Heritage Month.”

While some portions of the U.S. already recognize such a holiday, no such recurring recognition exists at the federal level. Joined by Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., the congresswoman argued the month is needed to recognize the achievements of Arab Americans.

As a proud and unapologetic Arab American woman serving in Congress, and the Congresswoman representing one of the largest Arab American communities in our country, I know how important it is that our community feels seen by our federal government,” Rep. Tlaib wrote. “I look forward to getting April permanently designated as Arab American Heritage Month and ensuring that the Middle Eastern and North African community finally receives the recognition and resources they deserve.”

“They have helped shape Michigan’s identity, sharing their culture and traditions with us. They are doctors, teachers, business owners, service members, and most importantly, neighbors and friends. Arab Americans help make our state and country better every day. I’m proud to recognize April as Arab American Heritage Month to honor the continued accomplishments and impact of this community," Rep. Tlaib added.

Cosponsoring the effort are Democratic Reps. André Carson, Ind., Bonnie Watson Coleman, N.J., Jim McGovern, Mass., Delia Ramirez, Ill., and Jan Schakowsky, Ill.

President Joe Biden became the first-ever U.S. president to recognize April as Arab American History Month in 2022. He issued formal proclamations on the matter in 2023 and 2024.

Rep. Tlaib’s comments regarding the Middle East have sometimes earned her backlash in Congress. In November, she was censured, a punishment one step below expulsion, for having used antisemitic rhetoric amid Israel’s conflict with Hamas terrorists.

The representative was the sole member of Congress to vote “present” on a resolution condemning Hamas terrorists for sexual violence. Most recently, she also voted against a resolution this week condemning “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” as an antisemitic phrase.
