WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - Booker T. Washington Elementary started a reward program on Friday, Oct. 13, to recognize student progress for exceeding academic or behavior standards.

“We just want to recognize students for going above and beyond, academically and behaviorally,” Synquis Lewis, principal of Booker T. Washington, said, “and so we need things to do that and reward them with.”

This reward program isn’t just for those at the top of the class; it also highlights those who have made progress during the school year. According to Lewis, some students struggle with a lack of recognition, so the more frequent rewards increase their chances of wanting to perform better academically and behaviorally.

There are multiple categories to reward and highlight various students, such as rewards for outstanding character.

“We have what we call our character champion,” Lewis said. “We study character traits, and we’re building champions this year. Some of those character traits are compassion, integrity, and perseverance.”

Principal Lewis ensures that the rewards will highlight students who may have struggled at the start but made improvements. She said the community can get involved, too, by providing gift cards with small values to restaurants and areas that students like to frequent, such as Urban Air, Five Below, and the Family Fun Zone.
