SAN ANTONIO - It's been almost five years since Danielle Ma has been able to hug her sister and listen to her contagious laugh.

Dorinda Ma was killed in late 2018, beaten to death by her then-boyfriend Ryan Stanush.

He was charged with manslaughter in the case and put on probation. He posted his bail bond amount and was released with some conditions.

This weekend, Stanush, now 32, was shot and killed by police after attacking his sister and a Bexar County deputy.

Danielle tells us she was in shock when she heard the news.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office reports a deputy attempted to tase Stanush, then ended up having to shoot him.

He was still awaiting trial on that manslaughter charge, as well as a separate assault case from 2021.

"It helps me honestly sleep at night, knowing that he can no longer harm anyone," Danielle told us Thursday. "Unfortunately, it took the life of my sister."

Danielle calls it unjust. She says Dorinda was a beloved sister, daughter, and teacher.

She taught English at Mercedes High School.

"She's very lively and bubbly, and bright. And the biggest thing is that she just sees the good in everyone," Danielle said.

The Ma family feels closure knowing Stanush is out of the picture, but they didn't get to have the day in court they had been waiting years for.

We dug into Stanush's court records and found that he had violated probation several times.

There were multiple entries in online court documents showing motions to revoke his probation, as far back as December 2022.

Yet, Stanush was approved for a later curfew for his job last month. That curfew was one of the conditions of his bond.

Overall, he was able to continue living his life. We’ve seen this more than once in the last few weeks.

Anthony Guzman is being charged with capital murder just weeks after being released from jail on a separate weapons charge.

His bond was originally set at a thousand dollars in the previous incident, then raised to two thousand dollars. There were conditions to his bond too, like random drug testing.

Guzman is now being held on a $200,000 bond after police say he shot and killed a man at a car wash.

Nothing will bring Danielle's sister back, but she says families like hers and all victims of domestic violence put faith in the justice system...

"I think they need to follow through with what they charged them with, or the sentence they were given," Danielle told us. "I had hope and put faith in the system."

Dorinda's legacy will live on through her family, who is now focused on telling her side of the story.

"I just feel that people should know who she was, and what he really did to her because the actions really show for themselves," Danielle said.

The Ma family urges anyone suffering in a violent or abusive relationship to speak up and try to get help.

"Just being able to have that open line of communication is just so key," Danielle said. "Because you never know when, or how severe things are, or how bad it can be, but somehow making sure that they know that someone is there for them. It could be what saves her life."
