Walk in honor of former TASD teacher Saturday at Razorback Stadium

TEXARKANA, Ark. -- The inaugural Patricia Keener ALS Walk will take to the track Saturday in honor of a former teacher and to raise money for medical research.

Stepping Closer to a Cure will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Arkansas High Schools's Razorback Stadium, 1900 E. 18th St.

The Kappa XI Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Kappa Gamma Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity are hosting the event. The fundraising goal is $2,000.

Anthony Ware, of Alpha Phi Alpha, said the fundraising goal is $2,000. As of Thursday afternoon, at least 100 walkers had registered.

Patricia Keener was a former Texarkana Arkansas School District teacher Patricia Keener who died of ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in November 2022.

"Her family will be there for the celebration," Ware said Thursday to the Gazette.

Registration for the walk is $30 and can be made up to the day of the race.

Proceeds will go to research of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
