'Primo' actress shares how she went from high school theater to TV star

'Primo' is a Freevee's newest coming-of-age comedy that revolves around a teenager's juggling act between his college dreams, societal pressures, and the whirlwind of his bustling household, led by his dedicated single mother and five lively uncles.

Stakiah Washington, who plays Mya in the new series, joined KRLD's What to Watch team to talk about how she went from winning a monologue competition at Lamar High School to landing a spot in the cast of 'Primo.'

Your acting journey started at Lamar High School, where you were introduced to acting and ultimately won a national monologue competition. What was that experience like for you?

That experience was highly interesting. Because growing up in Flint, Michigan, where I was born and raised, we didn't really have like theater extracurricular activities like that. So once I did make the move to Dallas in high school with my family, um, it was a drama teacher named Iris Deck who was like, you know, I think you should audition and see, see what happened.

So, my junior year, of course, I obviously got in and I did the August Wilson monologue competition. In the second year, I also did the monologue competition and became president of the drama club, and then I made it to the finals to perform on Broadway in New York City. So it was really, really exciting.

So Primo is a coming of age story with a unique perspective because it shows a young boy being guided through his teenage years by his single mom, but also his five uncles. So, how was it filming this type of story?

It was an honor and a privilege because you know, as an actor we do so many auditions and you never know which one is gonna stick. Um, and it's so crazy because Mya was a character that just resonated with me so much. I didn't feel like I had to try hard or be something that I wasn't. I just felt like I could step into the role as myself and bring whatever elements of myself.

And I actually have a video on my phone after I did the audition saying, 'Hey, this is Maya from 'Primo,' tune in this date this time!' And I didn't know that. I was like affirming that I would actually land the part.
