Sen. Bettencourt: Houston ISD Has New Superintendent, Board of Managers After TEA Steps In to Cure Student Performance

Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles takes over as Superintendent of HISD effective June 1, 2023

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – “I commend TEA Commissioner Mike Morath’s selection of Mike Miles as the new Superintendent for the Houston Independent School District,” said Senator Paul Bettencourt earlier today, reacting to the appointment of Mr. Miles as the new Superintendent of HISD by the Texas Education Agency's (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath (right.)

“Mr. Miles’ experience with large school districts and implementing ground-breaking initiatives, including his experience with Charter Schools, makes him a perfect fit for the task at hand in the States’ largest school system.

Senator Bettencourt (R-Houston,) the principal author of SB 1365 that restored Texas’ Oversight & A-F Accountability Program to the state's education system during the 2021 Legislative Session – and which was repeatedly cited by the Texas Supreme Court in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) court case – said he looks forward to assisting the newly appointed Superintendent and Board of Managers at HISD.

"I’m confident that under Mr. Miles’ leadership – along with the new Board of Managers which reflects HISD’s broad range of backgrounds and skills and the diversity of the residents – the focus will be on improving the educational outcomes of our HISD school children,” said Bettencourt.

Mr. Miles is the former Superintendent of Dallas Independent School District, a graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the University of California at Berkeley, and Columbia University.
