Monday is the first day back for over 23,000 students at McAllen I.S.D, including those at the International Baccalaureate Campus at Lamar Academy.
“I am very pleased to have the IB Program at McAllen I.S.D.” said Superintendent Dr. J.A. Gonzalez, about the prestigious program. “It focuses on international studies, cultural awareness. It’s a global program so it offers a different perspective beyond just academics, it challenges students.”
The IB Program has multiple schools where students can study in the district. Alvarez Elementary, Perez Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, De Leon Middle School and Lamar Academy all house IB students.
Andrea Gutierrez, now a teacher at the IB Program in Lamar Academy, once walked the halls as an IB Student.
“My best friends today are still my IB classmates and I am constantly amazed by the things they’re doing out in the world,” said Gutierrez.
On top of their rigorous international studies, students also do mandatory community service. Many are also student athletes at their home campus and are active in Fine Arts and or other organizations.
“The IB program is really hard and it’s stressful when you’re in it. But getting that diploma is the most satisfying student, and in the long run, it’s the best thing for them,” said Gutierrez.
Students that are involved in the IB Program at McAllen I.S.D, not only are graduating with a high school diploma, but with a second IB diploma as well that is also internationally recognized.
Upon graduation, the students will also get 24 college hours at any Texas public university, making them a college sophomore before even stepping into College.
For the first time in history, in May 2018, all 62 of the IB seniors, who tested for their international Diploma, earned it.
“I’m very proud to have the IB program in McAllen, We are ready for another phenomenal year, our staff is ready to go, so expect great things from McAllen I.S.D. in 2018-2019,” said Gonzalez.
