A key expansion of the Centennial Greenway in St. Charles County is now officially open.
Great Rivers Greenway, along with the cities of St. Charles and St. Peters, hosted a community-wide celebration on Wednesday, May 24, to unveil almost 2 miles of new walking and biking paths along the Centennial Greenway, a planned 17-mile corridor that will stretch from St. Louis City to St. Charles County. The event at Schaefer Park featured live music, games and dessert from a local food truck.
Funding for the expansion, from Old Highway 94 at Christy Avenue to Schaefer Park and the Spencer Creek Trail at McClay Road, came from Great Rivers Greenway’s designated local sales tax dollars, along with federal funds awarded to the City of St. Peters and matching funds from the City of St. Charles.
The new trail is ideal for walking, running and biking, and is wheelchair-accessible. It connects to the larger network of trails linking St. Charles County to St. Louis County, located along area landmarks, such as the Katy Trail, St. Peters Rec Plex, Creve Coeur Park and the Maryland Heights Rec Plex via the Fee Fee Greenway. The connection to the Katy Trail alone opens up an additional 237 miles across Missouri.
