Head of violence prevention named

Austin Public Health has announced that Michelle Myles will serve as the city’s new office of violence prevention program manager. She will be responsible for shaping policy and coordination of violence reduction and community safety strategies throughout the city.

Myles has held diverse positions in the human services field, including managing homelessness contracts for Austin Public Health as a program coordinator.

In August 2019, the City Council established a Task Force on Gun Violence to advise on potential actions the city can take to reduce gun violence and to make recommendations for enhancing existing resources and campaigns, such as safe storage education, community and domestic violence intervention, and also gun surrender programs. The task force’s key suggestion was to create an appropriately resourced office of violence prevention.
