CLEVELAND — Former Cuyahoga County corrections officer Martin Devering was sentenced to 30 days in jail for tampering with records and dereliction of duty.

Devring, 61, pleaded guilty to the charges against him in February. He was sentenced Wednesday in the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost's office led the case against Devring. Their investigation revealed that in August 2018, Devring didn't conduct rounds, a requirement of his job, and thus missed a man who was dying in his cell, Yost said.

Devring then falsified jail records to conceal that he ignored his duties, the investigation found.

“Mr. Devring didn’t cause this man to die, but his actions could have made a difference in life and death,” Yost said. “Corrections officers are the gatekeepers for our jails, and they have an obligation to serve and protect.”
