DeSoto High School sophomore places in top 10 at agricultural fair

Sophomore Dasia Hudson and her pig placed eighth in her category.

DeSoto High School sophomore Dasia Hudson competed and placed at the Extraco Agriculture Competition in Waco on Saturday.

Hudson, an agriculture student, placed eighth out of 10 in her class after competing in Class 4, medium weight, crossbred gilts category.

While Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are deemed the jobs of the future, DeSoto’s Career and Technical Education program strives to introduce other career paths to its students, Welding and Agriculture teacher, Jerome Jones said.

“The competitions are great for our district and CTE program because it allows us to expose our students to professions and opportunities that are not very populated with people of color and minorities,” Jones said in a news release.

Students can secure scholarships prizes at most of the agriculture competitions. Hudson said she plans to continue to compete across the state of Texas at events held in neighboring cities.

“I really enjoy being able to compete against my peers at these events,” Hudson said in the release. “But not only that, each time I learn something new that would help succeed and be better at the next competition.”
