SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - Andrew Veit is one of 83 new teachers for Sherman ISD.

“So it’s pretty exciting, never thought, had a second thought about it,” said Veit.

They gathered Friday for the annual new teacher luncheon.

“I really appreciate Sherman ISD especially how welcoming they are to me, coming in as an outsider. I’ve actually been teaching for close to 15 years. I’ve been a musician performing a lot all over the country and teaching privately,” said Veit.

Veit is ready to teach percussion to grades 6 through 12, despite the pandemic’s unknown.

“I don’t really have anything else to compare it to. So it’s all new, and hey if everyone keeps saying it’s really hard, we keep getting thrown curveballs, it’s just going to get easier with the years to come,” said Veit.

Owen Meachum is a first time teacher this fall in 9th grade biology.

“This will be my first year. I’m excited, it should be a good year. I mean it came in at the right time. It’s a little uh, little iffy, but we’re gonna figure it out, we should have a great year,” said Meachum.

He says he’s glad to be starting his teaching career in Sherman.

“I think they’re doing great. They’ve got a lot of things they’re implementing that should keep everybody safe. Everybody here has been super welcoming, everyone’s friendly. Nice, great community feel that’s part of the reason that Sherman attracted me,” said Meachum.

He wants his students to know, they are in this journey together.

“You know, just come in with a great attitude, be ready to learn. Everything can change on a moment’s notice, so we don’t really know where we’re gonna end up, you know, tomorrow or the end of the week or the next month, so,” said Meachum.

School is set to begin in Sherman on August 17th.

“We’re gonna start the year strong, we’re gonna finish the year even stronger,” said Meachum.
