NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Adolph Mendez, 44, died Thursday at Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin from complications of COVID-19.

His family told the Herald-Zeitung in an interview 'T.J.' was born in San Antonio and lived in New Braunfels the last 14 years. His daughter, Brenda Johnson, said her father tested positive for the virus Tuesday after a test last week.

Johnson described her father as "perfectly healthy" and as a good father.

“He was kind,” Johnson said. “He was patient. He cared about others. He loved his family so much. He was very involved in our community and our church.”

Mendez was a kindergarten teacher at Oakwood Church in New Braunfels, he had six children, three boys and three girls, and a wife.

"You hear that the people who die are older or have previous health conditions but he was neither and the virus took him down hard,” his wife, Angela Mendez, told the paper. "It can happen to anyone, it’s not just a story that happens to people across the world. It’s here and it’s real and it can kill anyone, just like it did my husband."
