Local students explore career paths

Navarro County eighth graders participated in the Gear Up Career Exploration Day Thursday at Corsicana Middle School.

Students learned about different careers from local industry leaders and had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Laymon Hicks, author and motivational speaker.

Every participant received a Gear Up backpack, as well as Dr. Hicks’ book titled, “In Laymon’s Terms, Words of Wisdom.”

Representing careers in businesses and industry were Brinson Ford, Brookshire's, Corsicana Independent School District's Transportation Department Mechanic, Human Resource Recruiter, Insurance Broker, Navarro College Small Business Development, Nelson Putman Propane, Oil City Ironworks, Oncor, Pactiv, Smith Ag, Texas Workforce Solutions, and Walmart.

Careers in science, technology, engineering and math were represented by Bryder Chiropractic, Community National Bank, Computer Programmer, CISD Construction Management, CVS Pharmacist, First State Bank of Athens, Hometown Medical, Nalco Champion Ecolab, Navarro Dental Center, Navarro Regional Hospital, SkyMed, Texas Instruments, and Thryv Software Developer.

Representing careers in the arts and humanities were 106.9 The Ranch, CISD Communications, Collin Street Bakery, Corsicana Daily Sun, Drama & Theatre Arts Teacher, Maddie Ray Photography, Navarro Council of Arts, Outside the Lines Creative Studio, and TGB Solutions.

Professional in public service included Attorney Lowell Dunn, P.C., Business Attorney, Camp Gladiator, CISD Police Department, City Council Member, Corsicana Fire Department, Corsicana Police Department, Deputy Campaign Manager, Keller Williams Real Estate, Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio, Navarro County District Attorney, Navarro County Sheriff's Department, Stewart Insurance, Superior Care Funeral Home, Tejas Roofing, Texas Game Warden, Texas State Park Officer, and the United States Army.

Colleges represented included: Navarro College Athletics, Navarro College, Career and Technical, Navarro College Computer Information Technology, Navarro College Cosmetology, Navarro College Nursing, Navarro College Welding, Richland College, Texas State Technical College: Waco Texas A&M Commerce, and Trinity Valley Community College: Athens.
