SAN ANTONIO - Thursday afternoon, the principal at Nathan Kallison Elementary School sent a letter home with students addressing the loss of a fellow classmate.

According to the Bexar County Sherrif's Office, investigators said they believe the 10-year-old student was riding her bike on the sidewalk when she lost control of her bike, fell into the roadway and was hit by a car.

"It appears that she was riding her bicycle to school, just like any other child in this neighborhood," said Johnny Garcia, the public information officer with BCSO.

Barry Perez, the school district's public information officer, said the entire community is grieving the loss of the 10-year-old student in a statement sent via email.

The Kallison elementary school community is deeply saddened at the passing of one of its fifth-grade students. Our thoughts are with the student's family and friends and we extend our sympathies to them. A team of counselors has been assembled and is on campus to provide support to students and staff.

Shortly after the crash scene cleared Thursday afternoon, the only thing remaining on the ground was one No. 2 pencil.

"It's super scary that you let your child go to school and then they never come back," said Eduardo Negron, who lives in a neighborhood near the crash scene.

Negron, whose daughter also attends Kallison, said he's still struggling to comprehend the news.

"It's super, super sad," Negron said. "If you think about it, it's affecting everybody. It affects the community, affects their friends."

He said he was had just dropped his own daughter off at school when he saw the girl's bike lying in the road.

"It's kind of scary that that happened on a normal day, a school day," Negron said.

By the end of the day Thursday, a makeshift memorial had been set up for the young student.

People stopped to pray and leave flowers in her honor.

No one has been charged in her death.
