An 11-year-old student from Fort Concho Elementary School in San Angelo is trying to tackle a big problem and teach us all an important lesson in the process.

“I’ve been noticing it ever since I’ve been young like just driving around seeing all the people in the streets realizing how big of a problem this is and that it can happen to anybody," said Will Graves.

Graves, a fifth grader at Fort Concho, was assigned a class project that turned into something deeper.

This “passion project”, was assigned by his teacher Alison Gryder.

“They know these projects are real. They're not for a grade. These are for their interest level, for making a difference in their world and something that they might end up doing as a career even,” said Gryder.

Gryder believes some things are not just taught in the classroom.

“His project on helping the homeless is not just facts about the problems, but how he can be a part of a solution,” said Gryder.

As part of Will’s assignment, he set up a food drive at Market Street to collect food for the homeless, but his mentor Susan Gober said it goes a step further.

“It benefits the eight blessing boxes scattered throughout San Angelo,” said Gober.

According to Gober, these blessing boxes allow people to get food without having to interact with anyone.

“Sometimes some of them don’t want to ask for help so the little free pantries are a great way to give them food and they don’t have to ask for it,” said Gober.

The food drive will be held at market street from 11 am to 4 p.m on Sunday.

They will be accepting canned good items with a pull tab and monetary donations.
