Former Utah teacher sentenced 34 years to life for killing ex-husband's girlfriend

UPDATE: (June 30, 2020) -- Chelsea Watrous Cook was sentenced to 34 years to life in West Jordan’s 3rd District Court on Monday for killing Lisa Vilate Williams.

Cook pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated murder in February as part of a plea deal in exchange for the death sentence to be taken off the table.

The 33-year-old went into Williams' apartment and shot her several times in the presence of her boyfriend, Cooks' ex-husband, Travis Cook, and the divorced couple's 3-year-old twins on Nov. 25, 2018.

A woman has pleaded guilty to shooting and killing her ex-husband's girlfriend in front of her 3-year-old twins.

Chelsea Watrous Cook, a 33-year-old former teacher at Skyridge High School in Lehi pleaded guilty to the aggravated murder of Lisa Vilate Williams at an apartment in Midvale, Utah, on Nov. 25, 2018.

According to charging documents, Chelsea Cook entered her ex-husband Travis Cook's apartment while he was in the parking lot, where she initially said she would meet him after texting him.

She was told to leave the apartment multiple times but refused. In documents, Cook said she then locked herself in the bathroom for about 15 seconds before coming back out to grab her coat before pulling out a handgun and firing three to five shots at Williams, according to police.

She pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, firearm felonies, and committing violent offenses in front of children, a misdemeanor. Sentencing is expected in May where she faces the possibility of life in prison.

Williams' family said she had been harassed previously by Chelsea Cook.

She pleaded guilty to seven charges.

Williams' funeral was held in Arizona. Tawny Williams described her daughter Lisa as a "kind, sweet, generous, loving" person who "brought joy and excitement to every aspect of life."
