It’s Election Day! Today is the last opportunity you will have to cast a ballot in the hotly contested race for Texas House District 22 and 10 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution.

It’s an important election. The winner will replace Republican Pete Olson as representative of TX-22 in Congress.

One Democrat and six Republicans are battling for the seat.

The winner will assume office in January and collect $174,000 salary annually.

Naturally, Democrats are hoping their candidate, Dr. Eliz Markowitz, a school teacher wins the race outright.

And she’s got a good chance.

Remember, Democrats were able to “flip” the county from red to blue — Republican to Democrat — in the November 2018 election.

They’d love to snatch another Congressional seat from the Republicans, and they have the votes to do it.

Don’t believe it? Just ask former County Judge Bob Hebert, a Republican who lost his re-election bid in 2018 to Democrat KP George.

Conservatives have plenty of qualified candidates to pick from — Tricia Krenek, Gary Gates, Clinton Purnell, Dr. Anna Allred, Gary Hale and Sarah Laningham.

The danger, of course, is that the Republicans will split their votes over the six GOP candidates and Markowitz will walk away with more than 50 percent of the vote.

Certainly, the 10 proposed changes to the Texas Constitution are important. You can find them on our website at fbherald.com or in Monday’s edition on the front page.

No matter your political beliefs, your party of choice, whether you’re Democrat blue or Republican red, today’s the day you get to make a difference.

Vote.

And encourage others to vote.

It’s not only a civic duty, it’s your right as an American.

People in other countries can only dream of voting for their leaders.
