State Recruits Local Ag Advisors, Fresno State Students For Pesticide Videos In Hmong

Department of Pesticide Regulation Youtube Page
Michael Yang was one of the driving forces behind a series of 10 Department of Pesticide Regulation training videos produced for Hmong farmers.

Pesticide regulations can be tough to understand, especially among communities that don’t speak English. Recently, however, with the help of local ag advisors and video production students at Fresno State, California’s Department of Pesticide Regulations released a series of how-to videos about pesticides in Hmong.

In this panel interview, FM89’s Kerry Klein spoke with Michael Yang, a community education specialist with the University of California Cooperative Extension and Mali Lee, a Fresno State graduate, both of whom were involved in producing the videos; as well as Chia Thao, a Ph.D. student at UC Merced studying environmental health within the Hmong farming community.

Kerry Klein is an award-winning reporter whose coverage of public health, air pollution, drinking water access and wildfires in the San Joaquin Valley has been featured on NPR, KQED, Science Friday and Kaiser Health News. Her work has earned numerous regional Edward R. Murrow and Golden Mike Awards and has been recognized by the Association of Health Care Journalists and Society of Environmental Journalists. Her podcast Escape From Mammoth Pool was named a podcast “listeners couldn’t get enough of in 2021” by the radio aggregator NPR One.
