San Angelo Independent School District administrators spent Wednesday afternoon honoring this year’s best teachers at the annual “Teacher of the Year” ceremony.

And while all 25 did receive “Campus Teacher of the Year” honors–only two were named SAISD’s “Teacher of the Year”.

Fort Concho Elementary School’s Macy Smithson received one of the top teacher of the year awards for her work teaching science to 5th graders.

“It’s exciting, it’s very exciting,” Smithson exclaims after the ceremony. “I was totally shocked because, well, teachers don’t get shown appreciation as much so this is pretty cool.”

Carver Learning Center’s Bonnie Smith was the second to receive a Teacher of the Year award.

“I’ve never won an award so this is a surprise,” says Smith. “26 years of coaching, teaching and so I went to Carver because they needed somebody that loved kids. Somebody who cared.”

Smith and Smithson each spoke about guiding students through failure and the need for students to understand the importance of battling through adversity.

“We all make mistakes and we need someone that cares and can get them through it that can help them learn from it. Building relationships…that’s what it’s about,” says Smith.

“If you’re failing it’s not a total loss,” adds Smithson. “You can get another attempt to do something.”

Bonnie and Macy, along with the other 23 teachers receiving various awards did so with dozens of friends and family in attendance at the Johnson Street Church of Christ in San Angelo.
