Purple Pain | Parent's complaint sets off viral social-media joke storm

Never let it be said that Texarkana residents don't have a sense of humor.

This week, a local woman posted on Facebook complaining that a teacher had given her young son a purple marker to use.

Apparently, the child wasn't happy. Nor was the mother. They seemed to think purple was a color suited to girls and not fit in any way for a boy. There was even a suggestion that a boy using a purple marker could lead to gender confusion, something this lady wanted no part of.

Well, let's just say those who read the post took it and ran. And they kept on running.

There were a lot of comments. A lot of jokes. And then the memes started. Dozens of them.

Well, let's just say that most in the Twin Cities don't think purple is gender specific and they find it hilarious that anyone would.

That's nice to know. The teacher was just giving out markers at random, with no worry about whether the color fit within some narrow gender guidelines. She didn't see a problem. Apparently none of the other children did, either.

Teachers have a big job. The last thing they need is aggravation over something that's not anything. Nor do school children need to worry about silly things like gender-specific colors. They have important lessons to learn and that's not one of them.

We hope this teacher can laugh it all off - because a whole lot of folks in Texarkana are doing just that.
