Navasota implements new athletic regulations

Navasota Independent School District is implementing a new policy to further insure student safety at high school athletic events.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 24, all students in eighth grade and below will not be permitted to attend a high school athletic event without an adult. According to NISD superintendent Dr. Stu Musick. Students often stay on campus after school is dismissed and hang out until the gates open for athletic events. Those students are unsupervised other than faculty working the stadium. High school students will be permitted to enter games with their student ID and a ticket.

Navasota is moving forward with “Navasota Independent School District Maintenance Tax Notes, Series 2019. The board of trustees agreed to accept a bid for the T ax note proposal from Chase Bank entitled “Chase A Option.”

The maintenance tax note will fund improvements to athletic facilities throughout the district including but not limited to replacing the turf, track, scoreboard and elevator at Rattler Stadium.

Navasota’s baseball and softball fields will receive LED lighting, artificial turf and a new dual entrance. Revamping the seating is also a possibility. According to Musick everything will have to fall in place perfectly, but there is a possibility that baseball and softball field improvements could possibly be made before the 2020 season.

Rattler gym and the junior high competition gym will both get new floors.

Funds will be available Oct. 9, for Navasota to begin athletic improvements. The first payment that NISD will owe is slated for Oct. 20, 2020.

Not part of the Tax note will be the construction of new tennis courts that will be suitable to host tennis matches and tournaments with seating for spectators.

NISD hires Bond

Counsel

Norton Rose Fulbright US LLP was approved unanimously to provide Bond Counsel Services to NISD in relation to the Tax note.

NHS Band going to

Disney World

Navasota High School band will travel to Disney World in Orlando, Fl, in 2020. The band will not only have a chance to sightsee and enjoy the Disney experience, but they will also have a chance to perform. After the bid process, the NISD board approved Unique Travel and Tours to handle the travel planning.

New serving line

Navasota junior high will receive a new serving line purchased by the NISD child nutrition fund. The funds that are also generated from snacks that are sold has provided improvements in other schools throughout the district. Assistant Superintendent of Operations Dr. Ronnie Gonzalez said the NELC and High Point Elementary have both received tables from the fund.

The contract for the new serving line at the junior high is awarded to First Choice. They will tear down the existing serving line and install a new one.

Business recognition

Navasota ISD recognized several businesses for their commitment to supporting NISD in various platforms. Businesses were invited to attend the board meeting and were presented with a certificate of appreciation.

Those recognized included The Examiner, Pecan Lakes Golf Course, Sonic, Classic Rock Coffee Company, Walmart, TEAM Ford, Sterling Chevrolet, NOV Grant Prideco, Grimes County Steel, Trinity Heads Inc., Baylor Lumber and Central Texas Sports Medicine.

4-H extracurricular

status

NISD students will now be able to attend 4-H events without being counted absent from school. The board voted to approve the resolution that will give 4-H extracurricular status.

Students at NISD will not have classes Monday, Sept. 23, as the district will have a Teacher Inservice Day.
