Ohio bill cracks down on drivers who illegally pass stopped school busses

State Senator Theresa Gaverone wants to crack down on drivers who blow passed stopped school busses.

She introduced the School Bus Safety Act legislation that would increase penalties.

"The arms are extended, saying stop clearly, but people are going by with just total disregard for the safety of our kids."

Between 2015 and 2017 there were 4,306 accidents involving a school bus. 4,198 drivers were cited for failing to stop for a school bus that was loading or unloading children.

"It's only 30 seconds to let a kid get on the bus and I don't think its that much of a sacrifice when you talk about the life of a child," said Bowling Green superintendent Francis Scruci.

The law would double the fine drivers face of up to $500 to $1,000, and increase another $250 for repeat offenders.

Driver's license suspensions would increase as well
